TSA discovers 90 pounds of weed in Thanksgiving bag

One person apparently thought it was the perfect time to stash 90 pounds of weed in his bag at the height of the Thanksgiving air-travel rush. TSA officials at NY's John F. Kennedy Airport discovered 30 neatly packed bags with enough cannabis to lighten the mood at Thanksgiving dinner. JFK authorities reported on Monday that a checked bag filled with about 90 pounds of weed had been detected by screeners.

During routine screening, TSA officers at the JFK airport came across a checked bag filled with 30 bags of marijuana last week, each weighing about 3 lbs. TSA isn't looking for drugs but when TSA comes across them, police are notified, TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein said in a tweet on Monday.

Farbstein said that officials were notified and the Port Authority Police arrested the traveler.

The screening procedures of the TSA are focused on security and are designed to detect potential threats to aviation and passengers. TSA security officers do not search for illegal drugs or marijuana, but if a law enforcement officer discovers any illegal substance during the security screening, the matter will be sent to a law enforcement officer, according to the agency.

Farbstein reported last week she turned over the weed find over to local authorities in New York, where up to three ounces of weed is now legal not 90 pounds.
