Elon Musk poll says Edward Snowden should be pardoned by the public

The U.S. government has pursued former Central Intelligence Agency contractor Edward Snowden, a self-proclaimed whistleblower, and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange for years over accusations that they leaked confidential and sensitive information.

What Happened to Elon Musk on Saturday: Elon Musk ran a poll on whether Assange and Snowden should be pardoned. He said that the survey was not an expression of an opinion, but was meant to honor a promise he had made earlier.

The poll has received almost three million votes with just five hours left. More than 80% of the voters have voted in favor of pardon for Snowden and Assange.

Snowden Responds: Quote-tweeting the poll, Snowden said he and Assange were charged under a law designed to prevent fair trials. He noted that the law was originally aimed at suppressing an old anti-war movement.

Defendants are not allowed to mount a public interest defense, juries that are not allowed to hear it, he added.

Snowden who took refuge in Russia now has been granted citizenship by the country, while Assange, an Australian journalist and publisher, is now incarcerated in a prison in London and has been fighting for his extradition to the U.S.
