Apple wins lawsuit against medical device company AliveCor

Apple Inc. AAPL won in a highly publicized dispute against AliveCor, a medical device company.

What Happened: On Tuesday, the Patent and Trademark Office's Patent Trial and Appeal Board ruled that three AliveCor patents covering heart monitoring technologies for wearable devices are unpatentable, according to MacRumors.

The decision could disrupt International Trade Commission proceedings due to December 12 and could be a big win for Apple.

We appreciate the Patent Trial and Appeal Board's careful consideration of these patents, which were found to be invalid. Apple told MacRumors that AliveCor's patents were invalid and that they were invalid in the ITC against Apple.

Apple didn't respond immediately to Benzinga's request for comment.

Why It's Important: AliveCor filed a complaint against Apple with the ITC in 2021, alleging that the company infringed on several of its patents with the Apple Watch.

An ITC judge later ruled in favor of AliveCor. At the same time, ITC issued an initial determination saying Apple infringed on AliveCor patent technology. Apple is appealing against the same determination, according to the report.

This isn't the only legal battle between Apple and AliveCor. AliveCor also launched an antitrust lawsuit against Apple Watch in March 2022, after AliveCor filed a complaint with the ITC.
