Visiting Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi meets former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on November 25, 2020 in Tokyo, Japan. DU XIAOYI XINHUA BEIJING - China and Japan should work together to reach a new era of development and revitalization for Asia, said on Wednesday Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China CPC Central Committee, made remarks in his video speech at the opening ceremony of the 18th Beijing-Tokyo Forum.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the normalization of China-Japan diplomatic relations, and next year is the 45th anniversary of the signing of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship, Wang said both sides should take the opportunities of these anniversaries to push bilateral relations forward in the right direction in a sustained and steady way.

He said that China and Japan should honor each other with trust and stick to their political commitments.

He added that important and sensitive issues such as the history and Taiwan, which bear on the political foundation of bilateral ties, should be handled properly and relevant commitments must be honored.

Wang said that both China and Japan need to support each other and to pursue win-win cooperation.

China will promote high-quality development, expand opening-up at a higher level and foster a new development pattern, he said, adding that Japan is welcome to share the opportunities brought about by China's efforts to promote the common development and prosperity of the two countries.

The two sides should treat each other with sincerity and strive for peaceful coexistence, Wang said. There should be a consensus between the two sides and more new consensus should be sought, because there should be differences between the two sides. Wang said that there should be a deepening of the friendship between the two countries.

He noted that the two sides have been involved in a series of commemorative activities for the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties since the beginning of this year.

Wang said that the media of the two countries should play a positive role in this regard, because of the momentum to promote friendly exchanges and improve national sentiment.

He said that China and Japan should adhere to principles and uphold fairness and justice.

As important countries in Asia and the world at large, he noted that the two countries should shoulder their due responsibilities, step up communication and coordination, practice real multilateralism, promote regional peace, stability and integrated development, and jointly address global challenges.

Wang pointed out that the 20th National Congress of the CPC has chartered the course and mapped out a blueprint for China's development at present and in the future. Socialism with Chinese characteristics and Chinese modernization will surely make a positive impact on Asia's stability and prosperity and make a greater contribution to world peace and development, he added.

Fifty years ago, the older generation of Chinese and Japanese leaders showed remarkable historical vision and political wisdom, Wang said.

In the next 50 years, we should make the right decision, and work together to bring together a China-Japan relationship that meets the needs of the new era, and work with Japanese friends from all sectors to make a new era of development and revitalization for Asia, Wang said.

The Beijing-Tokyo Forum was founded in 2005 and is an annual event held in Beijing and Tokyo. The forum is a large-scale interactive exchange platform between the two countries.
