China willing to work with Mauritania to promote bilateral friendly cooperation, Xi says

LUDOVIC MARIN AFP POOL RIYADH — China is willing to work with Mauritania to promote bilateral friendly cooperation to higher levels, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday in a meeting with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.

In recent years, both China and Mauritania enjoy a deep traditional friendship, with their political mutual trust consolidated, practical cooperation deepened and cultural and people-to-people exchanges strengthened, Xi said.

He said that China strongly supports Mauritania in its pursuit of a development path that suits its own national conditions, opposes external interference in Mauritania's internal affairs and appreciates Mauritania's support for China on issues related to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang and human rights.

Over the years, China has helped Mauritania implement road, bridge, hospital, and other major projects that benefit people's wellbeing, Xi said, adding that China will continue to encourage Chinese enterprises to take an active part in Mauritania's energy, fishery, mining, infrastructure and other sectors to bring benefit to the Mauritanian people.

With the commitment and intention unchanged to Arab and other developing countries, China is willing to work with Arab countries, including Mauritania, to create a shared future for the new era and jointly create a new future for China-Arab relations, Xi said.

Xi said Mauritania is an important witness, participant and contributor to China-Africa collective cooperation and China is ready to work with the Mauritanian side to build a China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era.

Ghazouani said that Mauritania and China enjoy a well-developed relationship and cooperation in various fields, and that the one-China policy is an important red line to which the Mauritanian side will continue to adhere, and that the one-China principle is an important red line to which the Mauritanian side will continue to adhere.

He said that Mauritania will continue to support China's position on human rights and oppose any interference in China's internal affairs in the name of human rights.

Ghazouani thanked China for their constant help to Mauritania, saying that many important facilities and projects assisted and built by China, as well as the Chinese medical team, have benefited people's livelihood and boosted local economic and social development.
