Hong Kong Housing Bureau announces new sites for light public housing

At a Monday news briefing, Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin left and Project Manager for Architectural Services Department Edward Wong On-wa introduce the new sites for Light Public Housing projects. ANDY CHONG CHINA DAILY The Housing Bureau has announced more sites for Light Public Housing projects, a move that will fulfill the bureau's goal of 30,000 LPH units in the coming five years to meet the short-term shortage in Hong Kong s public housing supply.

Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin said at a media briefing that the LPH projects aim to use social resources optimally and will play a crucial role in improving the conditions and quality of life for people living in inadequate housing.

The new sites are Kai Tak Olympic Avenue, Ngau Tau Kok Choi Hing Road, Chai Wan Sheung On Street Sheung Ping Street and Siu Lam Lok On Pai. The Kai Tak site will provide 10,000 LPH units.

The LPH units will cater to those who have been on the waiting list for traditional public rental housing for three years or more, with priority given to families, according to Ho.

A photo taken on Monday shows a general view of a Light Public Housing mock-up unit at Kai Tak. ANDY CHONG CHINA DAILY The LPH units, equipped with basic facilities, have internal floor areas ranging from 13 to 31 square meters. The largest units can accommodate five residents at most. At the earliest, the first batch of around 2,100 units will be completed in three years, it is estimated. More than half of the LPH units will be in urban areas.

Ho said that open spaces will be reserved at the LPH estates for leisure and events and to facilitate mutual assistance among residents.

The city s subdivided unit tenants said they were thrilled with the LPH project and are looking forward to improving their living conditions as soon as possible after being invited to visit a mock-up unit for five people.

Members of the Hong Kong Executive Council said they were pleased to learn of the increased number of sites for the LPH projects and the reduced cost of these flats during a separate tour of the mock-up unit. The officials said they hoped that the projects will help to increase the supply of public housing as soon as possible, and improve the living environment of people currently living in unsuitable places.

The bureau had announced the initial four sites for the LPH projects : Tuen Mun Area 3 A, Tuen Mun Area 54, Yuen Long Yau Pok Road and Sheung Shui Lin Tong Mei.
