Influencer Andrew Tate appeals detention extension

BUCHAREST, Romania : Andrew Tate, a divisive influencer and former professional kickboxer who was arrested in Romania on suspicion of organised crime and human trafficking, appeared at a court in Bucharest on Wednesday February 1 to appeal a second 30 day extension of his detention.

Tate, 36, a British-US citizen who has nearly five million followers on Twitter, arrived at the Bucharest Court of Appeal on Wednesday morning. He was handcuffed to his brother Tristan, who is held together with two Romanian women in the same case.

All four who were initially detained in Bucharest in December will look to overturn a judge's Jan 20 decision to extend their detention for a second time by 30 days at the request of prosecutors.

They lost an appeal against an earlier extension.

According to a document seen by The Associated Press on Jan 20 the judge took into account the dangers of defendants and their capacity to identify victims with increased vulnerability in order to find better life opportunities. If the court rejects their appeal on Wednesday, all four will remain in custody until February 27 as prosecutors continue to investigate the case.
