Business group launches campaign for Ipswich city status

A business group has started a campaign to get city status for Ipswich.

The city did try to become a city as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, but was later pulled out of the race.

The project was set to gather evidence to present a case to the local council, so it could be prepared for when the next round of city bids begins.

There are currently 55 cities in England. If granted, Ipswich would become the first city in Suffolk.

Tom Hunt, MP for Ipswich, objected to Ipswich's last bid in 2021, saying his constituents did not support it.

She said that this is about gathering the evidence, building the narrative and being able to present a case of support for city status. Ipswich Central fully supports Ipswich Borough Council in submitting a bid if and when the time comes again, she said.

The council's leader wrote to the council in support of a bid being developed.

Ipswich has so much to offer and has a lot to offer residents, visitors and businesses, according to Ms Alexander-Parker.

She said that Ipswich is the hub of Suffolk and East of England - the place where digital and other skills are grown, we must harness this. The MP of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, Dr Dan Poulter, told the BBC he was fully supportive of the campaign.
