OpenAI launches Al Text Classifier to detect all AI- written texts

The firm announced the release of an initial version of the release on Tuesday, saying it aims to collect feedback and share improved methods in the future.

The makers of ChatGPT cautioned that it is impossible to detect all AI-written texts. The firm believes that good classifiers can help flag automated misinformation campaigns, position an AI chatbot as human, and use AI tools for academic dishonesty.

The launch of the Al Text Classifier comes after a week of discussion at schools and colleges over the fear that ChatGPT's ability to write just about anything on command could cause academic dishonesty and hinder learning.

There were millions of people who began experimenting with ChatGPT after it launched Nov. 30 as a free application on OpenAI's website. While many tried to use it creatively and harmlessly, the ease with which it could answer take-home test questions and assist with other assignments sparked a panic among some educators.

The tool is better at detecting if an AI or human wrote something, the longer a passage of text. Type a college admissions essay, a literary analysis of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man in a text, and the tool will label it as very unlikely, unlikely, unclear if it is possible, or likely AI-generated.

It's not easy to interpret how ChatGPT came up with a result because it was trained on a huge collection of books, newspapers and online writings, but often confidently spits out falsehoods or nonsense.
