US envoy to Moscow told to adhere to Russian law

Russian foreign ministry source said that Tracy, the new US ambassador to Moscow, was told by a senior Russian foreign ministry source who said that she must strictly adhere to Russian law when making statements about Russia's armed forces in Ukraine.

TASS quoted the US diplomats engaged in what was called subversive activities as being expelled.

A Russian foreign ministry spokesman confirmed that the US embassy received a diplomatic note from the Russian foreign ministry, but said the department's general policy was not to comment on diplomatic correspondence.

Russia has made discrediting its armed forces a crime punishable by up to five years in jail, while knowingly distributing false information about the military carries a maximum sentence of 15 years.
