Discord revamps its AI features as mania grows

Discord announced on Thursday that it will roll out new artificial intelligence features as chatbot mania intensifies.

According to the announcement, Discord said that the new AI features will allow users to summarize long conversations or add decorations to a user's avatar. One other AI feature will allow Discord users to remix their friends avatars using generative image models. For example, the feature could place a crown on a friend's head in their profile picture to celebrate their birthday.

The popularity of ChatGPT, a large language model, has attracted the attention of many experts with its writing ability, software coding, proficiency in handling complex tasks, and its ability to generate images, text or video in response to a prompt.

Discord said its Clyde bot will be reconstructed and powered by OpenAI technology. Discord said that the revamp will allow Dscord users to use AI-powered Clyde to answer trivia questions, schedule meetings and recommend playlists.

We covered Discord two years ago after the startup lets groups of users chat by text, video and voice, walked away from $10 billion sale talks with Microsoft. The company raised $500 million in funding at a $15 billion valuation the same year.

Last year, the platform became popular as people who were stuck at home during the epidemic turned to Discord for study groups, dance classes, book clubs, and other virtual gatherings. There is an invite-only place with plenty of room to talk about on the Discord platform.

Discord was founded by Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy in 2012 as an online voice, video and text communication platform designed for creating communities. The company hired Tomasz Marcinkowski as its chief financial officer about a month ago after a year of Pandemic-fueled growth.
