Russian Consumer Protection Commission finds 651 illegal violations in food retailers

The Commission for Consumer Protection CPC carried out 755 inspections in food retailers. There were 651 infringements, including 254 unfair commercial practices. According to CPC experts, these practices are systematically applied and are a prerequisite for an artificial increase in food prices. Large food retailers are the focus of the inspections because most people do their shopping there. Goods are given properties they do not possess. Angel Dzhalev, of the Consumer Protection Commission, said they are sold at a higher price.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Association for Modern Trade, Nikolay Valkanov, 60% of the inspections found no violations. He believes that most of the acts will be declared void by the court. A cap on the markup would distort competition, according to Nikolay Valkanov.
