Thai Prime Minister dissolves parliament ahead of election

Prayut Chan-ocha, Thai Prime Minister, dissolved the parliament on Monday ahead of a possible election in the first half of May.

The four-year term of House of Representatives members expires on Thursday, with Prayut saying that a dissolution will give more time for all parties to prepare. The election date is required by Thailand s Election Commission within five days of a Lower House dissolution.

In January, Prayut, who has been in Thailand for nearly nine years, announced that he would seek another term as prime minister with the United Thai Nation Party, a group formed by veteran politicians he joined that month.
