Former Hong Kong state senator arrested on national security charge

PHOTO XINHUA Former state senator Albert Ho Chun-yanHo Chun-yan was arrested on Tuesday morning by the national security police in Hong Kong on suspicion of tampering with a witness and perverting the course of justice while he is out on bail on another national security charge.

He was confirmed by the National Security Department of the police force.

Ho had once led the opposition Democratic Party, but was a former vice-chairman of the now-defunct Democratic Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China. He was previously charged with inciting subversion of State power and was remanded in custody until he applied to the High Court for bail in August last year, and was subsequently freed.

The bail conditions have a HK $700,000 $89,000 cash guarantee, a ban on publishing or republishing statements that are harmful to national security, and being prohibited from contacting any foreign official or legislator.

Ho was ordered to surrender his travel documents, refrain from leaving the special administrative region, observe a curfew and report to the police thrice a week.
