Vinfast electric SUV maker to expand to U.S.

VinFast, which started operations in 2019, is gearing up to expand in the United States, where it hopes to compete with legacy automakers with its two electric SUV models.

VinFast expects to export the first batch of VF 9 in the coming months to international markets after Vietnam, VinFast said in a statement, without providing a timeline for delivery of the new model.

The VF 9 model was originally scheduled to debut at the beginning of this year.

The VF 8 model of SUV is currently sold by the company. The last year, it started shipping them, and began delivering them to customers this month. The second batch will be shipped to the U.S. in the second quarter of 2023, according to the company.

VinFast, backed by Vietnam's biggest conglomerate Vingroup JSC, is the country's sole EV maker.

VinFast has secured 55,000 orders globally, of which 12,000 were from the U.S. market.
