The AAHK said cargo volume and flight movements increased by 6.7 percent and 95.7 percent year-on-year to 290,000 tons and 16,305, respectively.

Hong Kong residents, particularly Hong Kong residents, experienced significant growth compared to the same month last year due to the relaxation of travel restrictions. Traffic to and from Southeast Asia and Japan recorded the most significant increases.

Transshipments and exports increased by 46 percent and 3 percent, year-on-year. The most significant growth in cargo volume was seen in the Middle East, the Chinese mainland and North America, according to the AAHK.

It said the airport handled 4.2 million passengers over the first two months of the year, an increase of 26 times compared to the same period in 2022.

The AAHK said that flight movements increased by 60 percent to 32,520 percent year-on-year, while cargo volume dropped by 12.8 percent to 578,000 tons.

Passengers volume increased by around six times to 9.7 million on a 12 month rolling basis, while flight movements increased by 3.9 percent to 150,895. It said that throughput of cargo decreased by 17.2 percent to 4.1 million tons.

Flight movements and passenger volume have gone up as flights on more routes resume in recent months.

The AAHK said on March 26 that direct flights between HKIA and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport resumed, with three daily flights to Hongqiao.

Since March 2020, Hongqiao Airport has suspended all international inbound and outbound flights due to the pandemic control.

HKIA has a close relationship with Hongqiao Airport. A joint venture between AAHK and the Shanghai Airport Authority has managed the terminal operations and retail businesses at the Hongqiao Airport since 2009, according to the joint venture.
