Deons bow to tourists during pandemic in western Japan

A group of scientists at Nara Women's University and Hokkaido University studied the COVID-19 pandemic in western Japan and found that the deer bowed less frequently during the height of the pandemic.

The wild deer, which live in and around the Nara Prefecture park, which is about 1,200 square miles and are protected as a natural treasure, are celebrated for bowing to tourists for deer crackers, a snack sold at the park for the deer.

The group looked at the numbers of deer that gathered at three locations, including Todaiji Temple's Nandaimon gate, a hot spot for tourists giving deer the snack. The group also counted the number of deer bowing.
