Israel strikes Syria after overnight attack

This file photo shows Palestinian youth from different factions take part in a military parade at the heavily damaged Yarmuk refugee camp in southern Damascus on April 14, 2023 to mark Al-Qds Jerusalem Day, a commemorative day in support of the Palestinian people celebrated annually on the last Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan by an initiative started by late founder of the Islamic republic in Iran. On Sunday night Israeli war jets launched an overnight attack on military sites in the Syrian capital Damascus, causing only damage, the Syrian military said in a statement.

The Israeli strike was made from over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which has triggered Syria's air defenses, the statement said.

Some of the missiles have been intercepted, said the Iraqi Defence Intelligence Agency.

Israel has also launched two waves of missile strikes on military sites near Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said.

Israel has fired rockets on Golan Heights, the capital of Syria, the Israeli army said.

The watchdog group, which is based in Britain, said the attack aimed at an air defense base, military sites in the Hameh area in the countryside of Damascus and the vicinity of the Damascus International Airport.

In response to the latest attack, Israel has attacked Syria 17 times since the beginning of 2023, killing 48 military personnel and wounding 28 otgjhers.

The second Iranian guards member, who was stationed in Syria, died on Monday after an Israeli attack.

Israel has been involved in attacks in Syria for years, launching strikes against Iran-backed Shiite fighters in Syria, resulting in attacks on airports and military bases that are alleged to house weapons shipments for the Iran-linked fighters.
