China warns minors about encrypted messaging apps

In cities across China, authorities have warned minors not to use encrypted messaging apps, asking parents to delete the software from teens smartphones to avoid them being exploited by criminals. The move comes as China continues to crack down on the apps, which can bypass Beijing's prying eyes.

The new round of warnings have hinted at juvenile misbehavior and manipulation by criminals, with police across the nation indicating concerns about the use of encrypted messaging apps earlier this month.

The notices covered a flurry of domestic apps such as BatChat, Shimida, Seagull and Lianxin, as well as foreign texting apps like Telegram, WhatsApp and Twitter, all of which cannot be accessed directly in China. The app watchlist of multiple police departments varies slightly, some of which includes WhatsApp or Twitter.
