WHO's External Auditor General, Girish Chandra Murmu re-elected with overwhelming majority

Comptroller and auditor Girish Chandra Murmu was re-elected as the external auditor of WHO from 2024 to 2027 with a huge majority. He currently holds this position for a four-year term and will serve until 2023.

The present election was held at the 76th World Health Assembly in Geneva, where the CAG of India was re-elected with an overwhelming majority of 114 out of 156 votes in the first round of voting itself, the CAG said in a statement. In addition, seventy-nine votes were required for the majority.

Girish Chandra Murmu, born November 21, 1959 in Odisha s Mayurbhanj district, is an Indian IAS of Gujarat, who served as the Chairman of the IAS from 1985 to 1985. He graduated from Utkal University in Odisha with a degree in Political Science and an MBA degree from the University of Birmingham.

Murmu was a Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir before taking office as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India on August 8, 2020.

He had served as a Secretary of the Department of Expenditure, a Special and Additional Secretary in the Department of Financial Services and the Department of Revenue, and a joint Secretary in the Department of Expenditure.

Before his appointment as cabinet minister, Murmu had served in the Gujarat government and has a vast history in administration, economics and infrastructure.

Following his selection in March 2023 for the position of external auditor 2024 - 2027 of the ILO in Geneva, the re-election of the WHO is his second major international audit task.

The CAG is a member of the UN Panel of External Auditors and the boards of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions INTOSI and ASOSI. He chairs the INTOSAI Knowledge sharing committee, its IT audit working group, and the Compliance audit sub-comittee.

Dr Smita Murmu, CAG Murmu's wife, has a daughter, Ruchika, and a son, Ruhaan.
