Toyota sales rise 5% in April compared to year earlier

Toyota Motor Corp's worldwide sales rose nearly 5% in April from a year earlier, boosted by higher demand for hybrids and gasoline-powered vehicles in Japan and China.

Japan's automaker also reported better overseas sales of battery electric vehicles EVs, bringing the total number of battery-powered units it sold in the first four months of the year above last year's level.

Toyota sold more than 800,863 vehicles globally, including its luxury Lexus brand, in April, a 4.9% rise compared to the same month last year when sales were adversely affected by pandemic-causing parts shortages.

Sales of hybrids like the Prius surged to more than half of the 125,326 vehicles sold in the domestic market last month, outpacing a 21.5% increase in its overall domestic car sales.

Toyota's sales rose 46.3% to 162,554 units in April compared to the same month a year earlier, rebounding from the pandemic-related hit.

In April, the automaker sold 8584 battery EVs worldwide, including its Lexus brand, for the first time, accounting for more than 1% of its worldwide sales in a single month.

In January-April, the company sold 26,057 vehicles, compared to the 24466 battery-powered vehicles it sold in 2022.
