Elon Musk says Twitter will be banned in Europe over disinformation

Elon Musk's Twitter will be banned in Europe as France's Digital Minister stressed the need to combat disinformation - here's what the tech billionaire has to say.

After Twitter's departure from a voluntary rulebook that aimed to establish guidelines for big tech companies, France's digital minister Jean-Noel Barrot issued a stern warning to Musk's platform.

If you are required to sign a Permission Slip, you may have to ask your parent to sign a permission slip.

Disinformation is one of the gravest threats weighing on our democracies, Barrot said. Twitter will be banned from the EU if it repeatedly fails to follow our rules. A Twitter account tried to answer whether Musk's decision to withdraw was correct or not, saying: It s a lesser of two evils situation. The Twitter handleTRHLofficial said that the problem is rooted in authoritarianism. Musk answered, confirming that it was exactly the reason behind the post.

The uninitiated Twitter opted out of a voluntary rulebook encompassing regulations for prominent tech firms like Meta Platforms Inc. META, Alphabet Inc. GOOG GOOGL and Microsoft Corporation MSFT.

The report said it is designed to aid compliance with the forthcoming Digital Services Act, which becomes mandatory in the EU from August onwards.

One of Musk's motivations for buying Twitter has been to promote transparency and uphold freedom of expression. He is a strong supporter of reliable news and has been active in advocating for it. Musk has introduced Community Notes, a site that also has bad inaccuracies.

Since Musk took over Twitter in October last year, the microblogging site has approved 83% more censorship requests from governments like Turkey and India.

The tech billionaire responded to the report, saying that the platform never had an actual choice in the matter.
