Japan's foreign hotel stays top 10 million in April

In this file photo, guests room lights of a hotel are turned on in Tokyo forming a smiley face. The number of overnight stays by foreigners in Japan totaled 10.38 million in April, exceeding 10 million for the first time since January 2020, government data showed.

The April figure is up 19.5 - Fold from the same month last year and 92 percent of the total in April 2019 before the coronavirus outbreak, according to the Japan Tourism Agency.

The figure climbed to 37.24 million, up 12.5 percent year-on-year but down 5.6 percent from the pre-pandemic year of 2019.

Japan's real wages have slowed for the most time in nearly a decade, according to the National Bank of Japan.

The total overnight stays of foreign and Japanese guests at such facilities came to 47.63 million, up 41.6 percent from a year earlier but down 6.1 percent from April 2019.
