Twitter’s president Ella Irwin quits after 7 months on Twitter

In an interview with The New York Times, Ella Irwin, Twitter's head of trust and safety, resigned as the president of Elon Musk's social media site.

Irwin, who resigned on Thursday, served about seven months and declined to provide a reason for her decision.

For example, Musk had said that fighting child sex abuse material, or CSAM, was priority 1 for the platform. Irwin's departure comes at a turbulent time for the social media network, grappling with the dissemination of a conservative website's purported documentary on transgender people. The video was posted on Twitter's platform on Thursday, but visibility was limited, preventing users from retweeting or commenting on it.

Twitter's trust and safety team - the unit that Irwin ran until earlier this week - would have had responsibility for limiting the spread of the post. Irwin's successor, Yoel Roth, quit just two weeks into Musk's management.

The tagging of Twitter is a mistake, said Musk, who has been Twitter owner since October 2022 and has described himself as a champion of free speech. He said visibility had not lifted until Friday, but said the visibility limitations were not lifted. The widespread spread of hateful, racist, or inflammatory content on social media platforms has been of significant concern to both lawmakers, regulators, advocates, and the general public.

After Twitter acquired Twitter, Musk announced an advertiser flight sparked concern about undesirable content, including racially or sexually offensive material. He has since then taken steps to stem the tide and court advertisers, including the hiring of former NBCUniversal ad executive Linda Yaccarino as CEO.

Neither Irwin nor Musk ever responded to my request for comment. The email sent to Twitter was an Automated, non-informational response.
