To celebrate the power of inclusive engagement and democratic expression, The Jakarta Post teamed up with the PannaFoto Institute to launch a photo competition with the theme.
The competition marks the 40th anniversary of the Post, a milestone in the newspaper's history as it enters its fifth decade of reporting, promoting and safeguarding democracy in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
The aim of the project aims to document compelling, thought-provoking and inspirational moments that illuminate the diverse voices, experiences and perspectives of people participating in the democratic process, such as voting, community engagement, social activism and public discourse.
The panel then decided on what was the most striking entry among the vast number of striking entries. This photo essay will showcase the winners' stories in showcasing Indonesia's burgeoning democracy through public participation and development.
