UNHCR approves amendment to law on Center for the Srebrenica-Potoari Memorial and Cemetery

On September 20th, 2023, High Representative Christian Schmidt issued the decision Enacting the Law on Amendments to the Law on the Center for the Srebrenica-Potoari Memorial and Cemetery for the Victims of the 1995 Genocide.

The decision enables the Center to expand its activities, particularly those important for the genocide remembrance, to prevent denial and revisionism, ensure the protection of human rights, and contribute to reconciliation.

The Center has the power to establish a department for research and education, an expert commission, and an Honorary Board.

The center also has the power to search for special artifacts that are important to its work.

The decision strengthens the role of the Center, bringing truth, justice and trust building as key ingredients of enduring peace, stability and progress.

For almost three decades, the unanswered griefs of the victims of war have remained unanswered due to the absence of appropriate action by the responsible authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
