The government of Canada has suspended all visa services for Canadians after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's bombshell claim that New Delhi killed a Sikh leader in British Columbia.
Arindam Bagchi, a spokeswoman for Indian External Affairs Minister, said that the temporary suspension of all visa services for Canadians, including e-visas and visas issued in third countries.
The move has sparked a debate as to what it means for Canadians who plan to travel to India in the future.
Here's what we know so far.
What types of visas will be affected by suspension?
All types of visas, such as work, business and tourism, are affected. The applications through the online e-visa program are also suspended. Bagchi said any application that would have to go through the high commission of India in Ottawa or another Indian consulate is included in the pause.
Can I travel to India if I already received a Visa and a valid Overseas Citizenship card?
If you have an OCI card, a PIN, or a valid visa, you can still travel to India, because only new visa applications are affected by the suspension.
In a statement, Bagchi said, ''It's going to be hard to get away with it, '' he added.
What effect will Canada's consulates have on India?
Canada's embassy in New Delhi remains open, as do Canadian consulates across India, said Jean-Pierre Godbout, global affairs spokesman. The Canadian government, however, is reducing staff levels at its diplomatic missions in India due to concerns about the safety of its staff. This reduction in staff will likely mean disruptions for members of Canada's Indian diaspora who maintain business or administrative ties with the country, Sidhu said. It's definitely going to impact the lives of many, many Indian-Canadian citizens, he said.
The AP reported, with reports from Steven Chase, Robert Fife and the Associated Press.
