Finnish Lapland faces threats from permafrost melt

Temperatures in Fell Lapland, a sub-division of Finnish Lapland, have already risen by about two degrees from pre-industrial levels.

Lapland's natural habitats will change and disappear as permafrost melts, landscapes become greener as grass and shrubs take over open areas, and animal species will become endangered if not completely extinct.

Many of the species that live in treeless forests are already endangered.
