SEC director misled Cong. Robert Menendez, says crypto Law founder

John Deaton, a lawyer and founder of Crypto Law, has made headlines for claiming that Gurbir Grewal, director of the enforcement division of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, misled Cong. The Crypto Law founder alleged that the SEC director misled Davidson when he was asked whether Hinman's speech was approved by the ethics lawyer at the commission.

lawyer lawyers at the SEC approved the speech, Deaton said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, Wednesday.

The SEC's director of corporations finance, Hinman, served as chairperson. In a speech to the Yahoo Markets summit in November 2018, he said that Ether was not a security measure.

In his statement, Hinman claimed that Bitcoin was 'decentralized' and that ETH had become'sufficiently decentralized' over time.

The controversial speech was used by Ripple Labs to prove a point in its legal battle with the SEC.

The story is about the name of ex-NJ attorney general and current SEC enforcement director Grewal, who was charged with indicting Sen. Robert Menendez for sexual exploitation of a friend.

The mayor of New Jersey is accused of accepting bribes of cash, gold bars and a luxury car from three New Jersey businessmen who sought the senator's help and influence over foreign affairs.

In the case, the Department of Justice said an official told the senator that the request was not appropriate and disagreed with intervening. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, was eventually confirmed to be Grewal.

Prosecutors said that Grewal met with Menedez once in his office but failed to disclose to the team prosecuting Jose Uribe that the senator had approached him in the past.
