Government's Digital Transformation Plan Prioritizes Ride-Sharing and Five Other Key Sectors

In an effort to digitally revolutionize administrative and financial processes, the government has identified six crucial sectors for prioritization, including ride-sharing. Led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, a meeting on digital administrative and fiscal reform was held on October 11 to initiate discussions. By the end of the year, the government aims to compile an interim report, with necessary measures incorporated into next year's budget. The six key sectors encompass education, mobility, nursing care, child rearing and welfare, disaster prevention, and inbound tourism. Within education, the focus is on resolving issues like teacher shortages and disparate digital environments across municipalities. The government aims to address limited transportation options in certain regions through exploring the integration of ride-sharing services, especially in areas with reduced taxi availability due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital Transformation Minister Taro Kono expressed support in legalizing ride-sharing, particularly in areas lacking public transportation. The government also intends to enhance infrastructure for automated vehicles and drones while considering measures to facilitate financial transactions and foreign remittances for small sums to accommodate the influx of foreign tourists.
