A Seasoned Politician Navigates the Transition from Coal to Green Energy and Consumer Affairs

From Coal to Green Energy and Consumer Affairs

Pralhad Joshi, a seasoned politician and five-time Member of Parliament, has taken on a new challenge in the Narendra Modi government. He is now heading the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCAFP). This shift marks a significant transition for Joshi, who previously served as the Coal Minister during the NDA government's second term.

Joshi's experience in the coal sector will prove valuable in his new role as he spearheads the government's ambitious green energy initiatives. The Modi government aims to replicate the success of coal reforms in the renewable energy sector, particularly through its flagship scheme, PM Suryaghar Yojana. This scheme targets the installation of solar panels on rooftops of 10 million houses across India, contributing to the country's goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Joshi's proven ability to foster collaboration between the Centre and states will be crucial in achieving these ambitious targets.

At the MoCAFP, Joshi faces the challenge of managing food subsidies and prices amidst the ongoing free foodgrains scheme and high food inflation, particularly in pulses and oilseeds. The government has implemented measures such as curbing rice exports and allowing the free import of pulses and oilseeds to control prices. However, Joshi's department will need to re-evaluate these decisions to ensure fair prices for farmers.

Furthermore, Joshi takes over the consumer affairs ministry at a time when online scams are prevalent. The ministry plans to launch initiatives to combat these scams, including busting "dark patterns" in the online space and resolving consumer complaints through mediation.

Joshi's diverse experience and proven track record in fostering collaboration and tackling challenges position him well to lead these crucial ministries. His leadership will be instrumental in driving India's transition towards a greener future and ensuring food security and consumer protection for its citizens.
