Mitsui & Co. Starts Building Ammonia Plant in UAE to Promote Green Fuels

Mitsui & Co. has recently initiated the construction of an ammonia plant in the United Arab Emirates, in collaboration with partners including an Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) unit. This endeavor reflects the company's heightened focus on establishing worldwide supply chains for environmentally friendly fuels like hydrogen and ammonia as part of its commitment to advancing energy transition and addressing climate change challenges. Moreover, Mitsui has secured a loan agreement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to support the project's development.

The plant, situated in Al Ruwais, UAE, is projected to commence ammonia production of 1 million metric tons annually from 2027, designed to emit lower levels of carbon dioxide compared to traditional ammonia production processes. With a significant emphasis on sustainability, additional infrastructure will be integrated into the facility to capture and store CO2 emissions during manufacturing, aiming to commence clean ammonia production by 2030. Mitsui intends to procure a specific quantity of the clean ammonia generated at the plant to cater to the Japanese and other Asian markets, intending its utilization as a fuel source, chemical component, and fertilizer feedstock, among other applications. Notably, in the UAE, Mitsui and ADNOC have maintained a longstanding partnership in jointly managing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant dating back to the 1970s.
