In a pioneering move, Japan has launched the country's first facial authentication ticketing system for public transportation in Sakura, Chiba Prefecture. This innovative system allows passengers to conveniently use buses and trains by simply scanning their faces at ticket gates on the Yamaman Yukarigaoka Line transit system and the Yamaman Community Bus network, both serving the Yukarigaoka New Town urban development project in Sakura.
To utilize this advanced system, passengers are required to register their facial data and credit card information on a dedicated website beforehand. Once registered, passengers can board a train or bus by having their faces recognized by a tablet device at ticket gates. Fares are then automatically settled at the end of each month through the registered credit card, offering a seamless and efficient payment process for commuters.
The facial authentication system, which started on June 15, garnered positive feedback from passengers. Users appreciated the convenience of not needing physical tickets or cash for transportation, with one passenger highlighting the system's usefulness for families with children. Additionally, the system's ability to authenticate 60 to 70 faces per minute ensures smooth operations during peak hours, enhancing the overall commuting experience for travelers in the region.
