U.S. and Japan Fortify Military Alliance Against Rising China Threat

Japan and U.S. Strengthen Military Cooperation Against China

Japan and the U.S. have agreed to bolster their military cooperation in response to China's growing threat. This includes upgrading the command and control of U.S. forces in Japan and strengthening American-licensed missile production there.

The agreement, reached during the 2+2 security talks in Tokyo, aims to enhance joint operations and improve deterrence against China's assertive behavior, including its maritime claims, claim over Taiwan, and military expansion.

The U.S. Forces Japan command will be upgraded, giving it greater capability while still reporting to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. This is seen as the most significant change to USFJ since its creation.

Japan will also expand its production of PAC-3 missile interceptors for export to the U.S. and co-produce Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles. This will strengthen Japan's defense industry and contribute to regional security.

Additionally, Japan, the U.S., and South Korea held their first trilateral defense talks, signing a memorandum to institutionalize their cooperation. This trilateral partnership further strengthens regional deterrence capabilities.

These initiatives demonstrate the commitment of Japan and the U.S. to maintaining regional stability and deterring potential threats in the face of China's growing influence.
