The recent wildfire at the landfill near the village of Tsalapitsa led to a significant decrease in air quality in Plovdiv and its neighboring areas. Regional governor Hristina Yancheva has reassured the public that the situation has now improved, with air quality indicators back to normal levels. However, she emphasized the importance of residents continuing to adhere to the guidance provided by the Regional Health Inspectorate to safeguard their health.
Following the incident, the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water observed a drastic 7-fold increase in particulate matter levels, prompting an advisory for people to stay indoors to minimize exposure to the smoke-filled air. Providing an update on the progress made in containing the wildfire, the regional governor mentioned that more than half of the affected area has been addressed, and efforts to smother the fire with dirt have been successful. It is anticipated that the landfill wildfire will be fully extinguished by the end of the day, bringing relief to the affected communities.
