Japan Raises Alert for Nankai Trough Earthquake After Strong Quake

Following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake off the coast of Miyazaki prefecture on Thursday, Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued its first-ever Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information. This indicates an increased possibility of a large-scale earthquake in the region compared to normal conditions.

The Nankai Trough is a marine trench running along the southern part of the Japanese archipelago. Experts have long warned of the potential for a devastating earthquake in this area, which could cause significant loss of life and property across central and western Japan.

The agency's analysis suggests that the probability of a large earthquake in the Nankai Trough is now higher than usual, although it remains a relatively rare event. Historical data indicates that large earthquakes have occurred in this region every 100 to 150 years, and the government has previously estimated a 70% chance of such an earthquake within the next 30 years.

In light of the increased risk, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has urged the public to review their earthquake preparedness and be ready to evacuate immediately if necessary. The agency also recommends caution for the next week, as the probability of large earthquakes remains elevated following Thursday's event.

While the exact timing and location of a potential Nankai Trough earthquake are uncertain, experts believe it could affect a wide area, potentially spanning from the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku to parts of Honshu, including Aichi and other prefectures, and possibly extending eastward towards Shizuoka prefecture near Tokyo. The earthquake could also trigger a tsunami exceeding 30 meters in height, leading to significant casualties and economic losses.

The government has emphasized that appropriate decisions will be made based on the latest information and ongoing assessments. It is crucial for individuals and communities to remain vigilant and prepared for the possibility of a major earthquake in the Nankai Trough region.
