Yukio Edano Eyes CDP Leadership Return, Challenging Incumbent Izumi in September Election

Yukio Edano Seeks Return to CDP Leadership

Yukio Edano, former leader of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), is aiming to reclaim his position three years after stepping down due to the party's disappointing performance in an election.

Sources report that Edano, 60, has informed party members of his intention to run in the CDP's presidential election scheduled for September. He met with Hirotaka Akamatsu, a prominent figure within the party and leader of the Sanctuary faction, on July 9th to convey his decision.

Edano's official announcement is yet to be scheduled. However, he is believed to be seeking the Sanctuary faction's support to secure the necessary 20 nominations required for his candidacy.

The CDP's presidential election in September holds significant weight, as the elected leader will be viewed as a potential candidate for Prime Minister in the upcoming Lower House election, expected to be held by the end of the year.

While incumbent CDP President Kentaro Izumi has expressed interest in seeking re-election, Edano's candidacy presents a formidable challenge. Edano, a ten-time Lower House member representing Saitama's 5th District, has a long and distinguished political career. He notably formed the CDP in 2017 after being excluded from the Party of Hope led by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. Under his leadership, the CDP rose to become the main opposition party. However, he resigned as president in 2021 following the party's disappointing performance in the Lower House election.
