Perrigo Recalls Baby Formula Due to Elevated Vitamin D Levels
Perrigo Company is recalling a batch of powdered baby formula due to elevated levels of vitamin D. The recall involves 16,500 cans of formula sold by H-E-B grocery and CVS Health stores in 12 states.
The affected products are labeled as H-E-B Baby Infant Premium Infant Formula Milk-Based Powder with Iron and CVS Health Infant Premium Infant formula with Iron Milk-Based Powder. They were shipped to H-E-B stores in Texas and CVS stores in California, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
The recall was initiated after routine testing revealed vitamin D levels exceeding the maximum allowed. While short-term consumption of the affected formula is unlikely to cause adverse health effects for most infants, there is a potential risk for a small subset of vulnerable infants with conditions like impaired renal function.
The impacted products include cans shipped to CVS Health starting February 6, 2024, with a use-by date of November 11, 2025, and a UPC code of 050428318034. Additionally, formula shipped to H-E-B beginning February 2, 2024, with use-by dates of November 9, 2025, and November 11, 2025, and a UPC code of 041220164578 is also included in the recall.
Parents and caregivers can check if they have purchased the recalled products by looking for the lot codes and use-by dates at the bottom of the package. For questions or concerns, they can contact Perrigo at 1-800-538-9543, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
This recall is the latest in a series of issues involving infant formula, including a nationwide shortage in 2022 and a large recall of Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition infant formula earlier this year due to potential bacterial contamination.
