A Delhi High Court Case
The Delhi High Court recently declined to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to reform regulations for coaching centers. The court cited policy-making as outside its jurisdiction.
The PIL, filed by NGO Kutumb, aimed to address issues like criminal liability, fraud, exploitation, and safety in coaching centers and paying guest accommodations. This followed the tragic deaths of three students in Delhi due to negligence by a coaching institute.
The petition sought regulations for better living conditions, comprehensive education system reforms, and enhanced enforcement to prevent exploitation. It also called for the development of an education system focused on holistic development rather than just entrance exams.
The court noted that policy-making falls outside its jurisdiction. However, the petition highlights critical issues concerning student safety, exploitation, and the need for a holistic education system.
The plea also criticizes the lack of adequate and affordable housing facilities for students in Delhi, impacting their overall development. It further argues that the current education system, focused solely on entrance exams, has worsened the quality of education and increased reliance on coaching institutes.
The petition seeks to address these failures by urging the court to enforce regulations that ensure better living conditions for students and reform the education system to focus on comprehensive development rather than mere examination success.
This case highlights the need for stronger regulations and reforms in the coaching center industry and the education system to ensure student safety, well-being, and holistic development.
