Election Commission Gears Up for Assembly Elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is actively preparing for the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana and the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with other Election Commissioners, recently conducted a comprehensive review of the poll preparedness in both regions.

The term of the Haryana Assembly expires on November 3, 2024, and elections are scheduled for the 90 legislative assembly constituencies in the state.

Political parties have raised concerns about free and fair elections, deployment of central forces, and updating the electoral roll.

The ECI has assured all parties of its commitment to conducting free, fair, and inclusive elections.

The final electoral roll will be published on August 27, 2024.

The Haryana Assembly Elections 2024 are expected to take place on or before October 2024.

The ECI will meet with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Supreme Court has directed the central government to conclude the election process in the Union territory by September 30, 2024.

If elections are held before September, it will mark the first time in 10 years that Jammu and Kashmir will hold assembly elections.

The ECI is committed to holding elections in Jammu and Kashmir "at the earliest."

There are a total of 90 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, including 74 General, 9 ST, and 7 SC constituencies.

Jharkhand is also expected to hold assembly elections by the end of 2024.
