Japan and Germany Join Forces to Counter China's Economic Influence
In a significant move to counter China's growing economic influence, the leaders of Japan and Germany have agreed to establish a framework for consultations in the field of economic security. This collaboration aims to safeguard the free and fair international economic order, leveraging the shared strengths of both nations in industrial structure and advanced technological capabilities.
The new framework will involve high-level officials from both countries, including representatives from the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (Japan), and the Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection (Germany). This collaboration will focus on strengthening cooperation in critical areas such as supply chains for key minerals and semiconductors.
Furthermore, Japan and Germany will collaborate on research and development of the next-generation "6G" high-speed telecommunications standard and work together to establish international rules in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and cyberspace.
Building on the first intergovernmental consultations held in Japan in March 2023, the two countries have agreed to coordinate the holding of similar consultations in Germany next year. This ongoing dialogue will further solidify their partnership.
In addition to economic cooperation, Japan and Germany are also strengthening their security and defense ties. The Acquisition and Cross-servicing Agreement (ACSA), which allows for the exchange of supplies between the Self-Defense Forces and the German Armed Forces, came into effect in July 2023. The German Air Force is also deepening its collaboration with the Air Self-Defense Force through joint training exercises in Japan later this month.
The next meeting of the foreign and defense ministers (two plus two) is scheduled to be held in Japan, with both sides aiming to finalize the date as soon as possible. This ongoing dialogue and collaboration between Japan and Germany demonstrate their commitment to promoting a stable and prosperous international order.
