Japan and Australia Strengthen Partnership, Focusing on Economic Security and Regional Stability

Japan and Australia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their partnership, with a particular emphasis on economic security and regional stability. This commitment was solidified during a 2+2 ministerial meeting held in Melbourne on September 5th, 2023.

The meeting brought together Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Defense Minister Minoru Kihara of Japan with their Australian counterparts, Penny Wong and Richard Marles. In a joint statement, both nations expressed their dedication to enhancing their Special Strategic Partnership.

One key aspect of this enhanced partnership is the strengthening of the bilateral economic security dialogue. This dialogue will facilitate information sharing and cooperation on economic and strategic risks, ensuring both nations are prepared to address potential challenges.

Furthermore, Japan and Australia pledged to collaborate on developing evacuation plans for their citizens in the event of an emergency in a third country. This demonstrates their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of their citizens abroad.

The joint statement also highlighted the importance of the Japan-Australia relationship, which is considered a "quasi-alliance" by Japan, second only to its full-scale military alliance with the United States. Tokyo has been actively focusing on strengthening security cooperation with its Pacific neighbor.

Both nations expressed serious concern over China's escalating and coercive activities against the Philippines in the South China Sea. They condemned any attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion in the East China Sea and other regions.

In a further sign of their deepening cooperation, Japan welcomed Australia's planned participation in Orient Shield, a joint U.S.-Japan military exercise, scheduled for next year. This participation underscores the commitment of both nations to maintaining regional stability and security.
