Bulgaria Celebrates Unification Day with Calls for Unity and European Integration

On September 6, 2023, Bulgaria commemorated the Unification Day, marking the 138th anniversary of the unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia. This historic event symbolized the unwavering spirit of the Bulgarian people and their desire for unity.

Leaders across the political spectrum took to social media to express their sentiments on this significant day. Caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev emphasized the importance of unity in overcoming challenges and achieving European integration. He stated, "On September 6, 1885, Bulgaria demonstrated that no artificial border can exist between Bulgarians. Today, we strive to remove the last one, artificially separating us from the European Union. United, we will succeed!"

Echoing this sentiment, Boyko Borissov, leader of the GERB party, recalled the national motto "Unity makes strength." He highlighted the significance of the Unification Day as a testament to the power of collective action.

Kiril Petkov, co-chairman of We Continue the Change, drew parallels between the historical unification and the current aspirations of the Bulgarian people. He stated, "The Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia - an act that was possible because Bulgarians believed in themselves without waiting for a savior, and this changed our history."

Delyan Peevski, chairman of the parliamentary group of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), emphasized the importance of preserving national identity and European values. He urged unity and collaboration for the betterment of the nation.

Kostadin Kostadinov, leader of Vazrazhdane, expressed his desire for a free, independent, and united Bulgaria. He viewed the Unification Day as a reminder of the nation's potential and the need to strive for its realization.

Atanas Zafirov, interim chairperson of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, acknowledged the challenges facing Bulgaria and stressed the importance of following the example of unity demonstrated during the unification. He stated, "The Day of the Unification is the bright date that proves the greatness of the Bulgarian national ideal. Today, when Bulgaria is facing serious challenges, we are obliged to follow this great example."

The Unification Day served as a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of the Bulgarian people and their unwavering commitment to unity and progress. As the nation navigates contemporary challenges, the lessons learned from this historic event continue to inspire and guide its path towards a brighter future.
