Bulgaria and Germany Sign Agreement for Joint Purchase of IRIS-T Air Defense Systems

Bulgaria's caretaker Minister of Defense, Atanas Zapryanov, and his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, signed a program agreement for the joint purchase of IRIS-T air defense missile systems. The signing took place during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

This agreement falls under the Memorandum of Understanding on the joint purchase of ground-based air defense systems within the framework of the European Sky Shield Initiative. The initiative aims to address the shortfall in the Bulgarian Air Force's air and missile defense capabilities through technological upgrades and to achieve interoperability within the allied air defense system.

Bulgaria Reiterates Support for Ukraine

In addition to the agreement signing, a bilateral discussion between the Bulgarian and Ukrainian delegations was held to explore joint solutions for supporting Ukraine. During the discussion, Defense Minister Zapryanov reaffirmed Bulgaria's continued support for Ukraine, in line with the decisions of the National Assembly.
