Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren made a notable move by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Ranchi just before the state's assembly elections. Once a key figure within the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party, founded by Shibu Soren, Champai's decision to leave JMM was marked by a public event in Ranchi, where he and many supporters shifted their allegiance to the BJP in the presence of union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Champai Soren, who had recently served as a minister in the Hemant Soren cabinet, emphasized his discontent with the current administration's approach and policies as the driving factor behind his decision to part ways with the party he had been associated with for years. His resignation from JMM came after a period of internal political turmoil, with his departure from the CM position in early July to make way for Hemant Soren, who took over after being released on bail following an arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. Champai's departure was reportedly fueled by feelings of being ousted unceremoniously, leading to sentiments of being 'insulted' by the party's handling of the leadership transition.
In the wake of Champai Soren's resignation, JMM legislator Ramdas Soren was sworn in as a minister in the Hemant Soren government in Jharkhand. The Ghatshila MLA's induction into the state cabinet followed Champai Soren stepping down from his ministerial and MLA roles. The oath-taking ceremony, officiated by Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, was attended by various key figures including CM Hemant Soren, senior leaders of the JMM-led alliance, and government officials.
