UNHCR Reports Significant Challenges Remain in Refugee Education

The UNHCR has pointed out that despite some improvements in refugee education, there are still significant challenges impacting the education of refugee children worldwide. The report details how approximately 7.2 million refugee children are not receiving an education, emphasizing the barriers such as insecurity and lack of inclusive policies that prevent these children from accessing schooling. This lack of education not only hinders their immediate prospects but also jeopardizes their future opportunities and potential for prosperity.

According to the report, the global enrollment rates for refugee children show a mixed picture - with 37 percent enrolled in pre-primary education, 65 percent in primary education, and 42 percent in secondary education. However, there is a persistent challenge when it comes to tertiary education for refugees, where only a small percentage (7 percent) are enrolled due to issues like high tuition fees and limited connectivity. The UNHCR report also highlighted the target of achieving a 15 percent enrollment rate for tertiary education by 2030, which remains a distant goal as of now.

Despite the obstacles, the UNHCR acknowledges some progress over the past five years, noting an expansion of access to education for refugees in certain key hosting countries. The report also mentioned the positive trend of high pass rates for refugees in national examinations in some instances. The UNHCR's call for increased international cooperation and partnerships to address the education needs of refugees by 2030 underscores the urgency and importance of providing education to this vulnerable population.
