India Aims for 10 Semiconductor Fabs in 10 Years
India is aiming to establish 10 semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs) within the next decade, according to Akash Tripathi, a top official at the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The government has received 20 proposals for setting up semiconductor units, with five already approved, entailing an investment of Rs 1.52 trillion.
The upcoming Semicon India 2024 event, scheduled for September 11-13, is expected to be four to five times larger than anticipated, with over 250 companies from 24 countries participating. The mobile phone industry in India is poised to be a major consumer of the storage chips that will be produced domestically.
India's journey towards becoming a semiconductor powerhouse has begun, and the next decade will be crucial in determining the success of this ambitious endeavor.
