Dialogue and Negotiations are the Only Way Forward
India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, has emphasized that India's position on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine rests on the belief that differences and disputes cannot be settled through war. He stressed that dialogue and negotiations are the only way forward, and that at some point, negotiations must take place.
Jaishankar made these remarks during a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Berlin. He highlighted India's involvement in various initiatives related to the war, including the green corridor and the security of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear station. He also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, where detailed discussions took place.
Jaishankar elaborated on India's postulates, stating that the country does not believe in war as a means to resolve conflicts. He emphasized that a solution to the conflict will not come from the battlefield, and that negotiations are the only way forward. He also stressed the importance of including Russia in any discussions, as excluding them would hinder progress.
Prime Minister Modi's visit to Ukraine in August 2023 marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992. During his meeting with Zelenskyy, Modi reiterated India's stance on the conflict, stating that dialogue is the only solution and that India stands on the side of peace. He also expressed India's willingness to play an active role in the path towards peace and progress.
