Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams, currently residing on the International Space Station (ISS), has shared her positive experience of living in space, referring to it as her "happy place." Originally scheduled for an eight-day mission on Boeing's Starliner with fellow NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore, their stay was prolonged to eight months due to technical problems that prevented the spacecraft from safely returning them to Earth.
Due to issues such as helium leaks and thruster failures, the crew's return aboard the Starliner was not possible, leading to their transfer to SpaceX's Crew-9 mission for a return to Earth in February 2024. Despite the unexpected extension, Williams expressed contentment with station life, emphasizing her love for being in space, especially considering her previous experience on the ISS.
In a press conference addressing the situation, Williams acknowledged the uncertainties in space exploration, highlighting the need to adapt and embrace new opportunities. While there might have been initial hopes to complete their mission on the Starliner, she emphasized the importance of moving forward and focusing on the next chance to fulfill their goals. Wilmore, her crewmate, also shared a similar sentiment, mentioning the transfer to SpaceX's mission was necessary for their safety as they couldn't feel secure returning on the Starliner.
