Komeito Leader Yamaguchi Announces Departure, Ushering in New Era

Natsuo Yamaguchi, the leader of Komeito, the junior coalition partner in Japan's government, has announced his decision to step down at the end of his term. This marks a significant shift in leadership for the party, as Yamaguchi has served as its face for the past 15 years.

Yamaguchi, 72, made the announcement at a news conference on September 10th, stating that he would not seek re-election in the party's upcoming leadership contest later this month. His decision coincides with leadership changes within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), where Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has also opted not to seek re-election.

"A wave of generational change is sweeping the political world, both domestically and internationally," Yamaguchi remarked. "I've decided it's time to pass the baton to the next generation."

Yamaguchi's departure signifies the end of an era for Komeito. He assumed the leadership role in 2009 following the party's significant defeat in the Lower House election, succeeding Akihiro Ota. During his eight terms, Yamaguchi became the longest-serving Komeito leader since the party's re-establishment in 1998.

While there were calls for Yamaguchi to remain as party leader, particularly in light of potential snap elections later this year, the party ultimately opted for a change in leadership and a new generation. Internal discussions are expected to take place, with Komeito Secretary-General Keiichi Ishii likely to emerge as the sole candidate in the upcoming leadership election.
